Shiraz is a city founded in the first century AH. It seems that the founders of this city borrowed the name of Shiraz from the name of a castle that existed before Islam near the current location of the city called Shiraz.

The name of Shiraz is apparently found in Elamite tablets discovered in Persepolis as follows:

, ish-si-ra-Ti, is-si-Shir, ish-si-is-ra-Ti ish-si-is-ra-Shi

Tedesco came and guessed in the magazine of the Eastern American Association and took the name of this city from the two words evil (meaning good) + secret (fellow [rose]), but Master Benonist and Master Henning did not like this derivation and rejected it and said That “evil” means good in the dialects of Eastern Iran and also in a word Parthian (in combination) and has no precedent in the southern and western dialects. (From the margin of the specific argument).

It is narrated that the founder of this city was Muhammad ibn Qasim ibn Aqeel, the cousin of Hajjaj ibn Yusuf. In ancient times, the city of Shiraz was a completely irregular circle surrounded by fences and towers, and its perimeter was a little more than one farsakh and had six gates, and its inner part was divided into eleven neighborhoods.

In the year 430 AH. ق. Amir Abu Kalijar destroyed the city of Istakhr and moved its population to the new city of Shiraz, and soon this city prospered and settled, but after several earthquakes and the invasion of different tribes, it repeatedly destroyed it. In 795 AH. ق. Amir Timur ruined it. But in the year 1180 AH. ق. Karim Khan Zand made Shiraz his capital, built a fence around it, paved its alleys and built the Vakil Bazaar.

The old houses of Shiraz were full of trees and flowers and were made of stone, plaster and brick. The alleys are paved and the scent of spring orange has always been present in the streets and neighborhoods.
There are several narrations about the construction of Shiraz. For example, it is said that Shiraz ibn Tahmurth built this city and named it the city of Persia. Some other narrations indicate that Muhammad ibn Qasim ibn Aqeel and other people have attempted to rebuild this city and …. In any case, the existence of Elamite inscriptions shows that there was a castle called Tirazis or Shirazis in the place of the current city of Shiraz. In June 1970, excavations were carried out in the southeastern corner of Shiraz to build brick kilns, which resulted in the discovery of a number of 2,000-year-old slabs. In these tablets, the existence of a city called Tizaris in ancient Ilam is mentioned. It seems that the old names of Shiraz were pronounced in forms such as: Tiracis, Siracis or Sirajis, which throughout history due to the change of sounds, these forms have changed from old letters to present-day Shiraz. The old names of Shiraz have become modern over time

  1. The name of Shiraz has been registered in historical books and documents with different names such as: “Tirazis”, “Shirazis” and “Shiraz”. The original location of this city was at the site of Abu Nasr Castle. Shiraz was moved to its present location during the Benjamiyya period, and flourished at the cost of destroying Istkhr, the ancient capital of Persia. This city was the capital of Iran during the Saffarids, Boians and prisoners.

Shiraz has long been a natural place for local exchanges of goods between farmers, successors and nomads due to its relative centrality in the South Zagros region and its location in a relatively fertile area. The city is also located on the trade routes inside Iran to southern ports such as Bandar Abbas and Bandar Bushehr.

Due to its many historical, cultural, religious and natural attractions, Shiraz always attracts many tourists. [7] Most of the people of Shiraz are Persian-speaking and speak the Shirazi dialect. Shiraz is the fifth most populous city in Iran, the cultural capital of Iran, the second literary city in the world and the third religious city in Iran.
